The Great Marker Challenge: Is this the Ideal Copic Starter Set? Coloring Butterflies

Flutterbys!

It's Friday and it's time for another Great Marker Challenge image!

This is "Butterflies" by Urban Stamps. And by no coincidence, I'm teaching this project in my beginner level Copic Coloring classes in August.

Great Marker Challenge?

Yep!

Copic doesn't seem to market themselves very well to new colorers. You hear rumors about these fabulous, mysterious, and beautiful markers but they don't sell a starter set.

What to do?

If you Google "Copic starter set" you get 9,000 recommendations from 4,200 bloggers and none of them agree.

Who do you trust? Who's list isn't full of bunk?

Okay, so I'll admit it, my recommended starter set is the 9,001 to hit the internet.

But here's the thing- I don't tell you what my favorite colors are. I don't wax endlessly about "if you color maple trees you'll need this marker but you don't need it if you only color penguins wearing bikinis..."

Simply put, I don't tell you, I show you.

Yeah, I don't dink around. You want info about what to buy today, not my inner philosophy on the merits of warm gray markers.

You can read about that another day.

Look at the range of images that I can color with my set of 42 markers. If they look like the kinds of stamps you own, the kind of images you want to color, then use my list as a shopping guide.

And hey, if you're in Southeastern Michigan and want to color this image in a class with me, check out the class details here.

Happy Friday, happy coloring!

Great Marker Challenge- "All Aflutter" Coloring Images with a Limited Copic Marker Palette

My heart is all aflutter...

It's been a while since I colored for fun.

I know that's a sad thing to say, given that my job pretty much requires me to have a Copic marker in my hand for several hours each day.

But there's a difference between coloring for a lesson and going into a project with no goals or pre-set techniques. It's not often that I get to go where the Muse wants to take me.

This is a tiny project but it was fun to start from scratch and sketch my idea of a winged heart.

Although I must confess, I did have one small goal- this is another entry in my Great Marker Challenge.

Great Marker Challenge?

Yessiree! I've seen a lot of Copic starter kit recommendations on various websites but "My Favorite Copics" or "Essential Copic Colors" does nothing to prove the usefulness of the list. Sure if works for the author, but will it really work for you?

So I'm not just giving you a marker list. I'm teaching classes with only the markers on the list. I'm coloring images to demonstrate its value.

And if you like the results, if you plan to color a similar range of images, then you can confidently invest in my recommended list.

The Great Marker Challenge: Oak Leaf using my starter Copic Marker Collection

Indian Summer Color...

I showed this colored stamp on Monday for all my Copic Club students. This is one of three images we will color in November's classes.

But it also uses the Great Marker Challenge kit!

Great Marker Challenge?

Yep. Lots of coloring instructors have recommended starter kit lists but how is a brand new, absolute beginner supposed to know if the kit is good for anything they intend to color? How do you know that Marker Goddess #23's list will work for you? Frankly, most beginner kit lists are a wild shot in the dark- either the best list ever or a complete waste of money.

So I'm putting my kit to the test! It's not just a purchase list, I'm showing you what you can do with it.

The Great Marker Challenge: Fall Horse Chestnuts

It's Friday, time for the Great Marker Challenge!

This is an itty bitty image but I still couldn't resist doing the ultimate fall blend of 7 markers!

Greens through red, all beautiful colors featured in my Great Marker Challenge starter kit list!

Horse Chestnuts stamp in the "Cherish Yesterday" set by Hero Arts. I know most people use it as a fancy background stamp but here I'm using that wide open space to fill it with glorious autumn color!

I teach beginner Copic classes using this kit, now I'm challenging the limit of the list! 42 markers, 52 weeks, how many images can I color before I have to add to the kit?
