Vanilla Undercover: Underpaint with Copic Markers for Beautiful Realism - Placid Lake
Make a Statement with Blue
Real shade is not darker color, real shade is desaturated color.
To create the desaturated colors that Copic Marker does not make, Vanilla Arts Company teaches Online Workshops and Livestream Coloring Challenges using the underpainting method. Students learn to layer colors realistically rather than blend.
Underpainting creates natural colors found in everyday life.
Placid Lake
I learned on a submarine dive that the deeper you go the bluer everything becomes. So what do you do if the darkest marker can’t take the blue deep enough? Call for backup! Or in my case, a marker to underpaint with.
You can achieve this majestic blue blend with the addition of a BV marker. Don’t just take my word for it. Try it!
Start with a layer of the first marker (BV04), followed by a coat of the second marker (BG09), then a coat of the third marker (BG07), and lastly a coat of the fourth marker (BG05).
Don’t be shy with your markers because you need to put down enough ink for them to blend. But after you do put down your color layers, don’t be in a hurry. It is important that you give the Copic ink time to blend.
I recommend that you swatch colors before coloring your image. It’s a great warm up for your coloring session and builds your coloring confidence.
