Do your food projects look cartoonish?
Do you get bogged down by tiny crumbs, crevices, and details?
Let’s simplify your approach to food— having more fun when we color but also adding more life to your food projects!
Fine Art Lessons for Colorists - Realistic Food Illustration
FOOD THAT ACTUALLY LOOKS APPETIZING
Have you ever colored food so well that made someone else hungry?
Isn’t that what food illustration is supposed to do?
For the last decade or so, most colorists have been coloring food with smiling cartoon faces. Call it chibi or cute overload…
But whatever it is, it doesn’t really look like food.
Let’s swing the opposite direction, coloring food which looks edible and even mouthwatering!
Realistic food isn’t as hard as you think.
Let me show you how.

Food illustration often feels like something just for “real” artists
It’s intimidating right?
So we slap a happy face on it as an excuse for coloring cartoonish food.
Why do we try so hard to color realistic flowers but totally give up on lifelike food?
I’ve been teaching realistic food lessons for over a decade now. Let me help you master the final coloring frontier.
Improve your coloring by improving how you think about color
Advanced Independent Level
Copic Markers & Prismacolor Pencils
Minimal Supply lists
Maximum Impact
You see food every day. You know more about realistic food texture than any other subject. So let’s color it!
IT'S TIME FOR A NEW KIND OF CLASS:
-
SKILL
Control markers and pencils with accuracy. When the mechanics of coloring becomes automatic, your mind is free to concentrate on the important aspects of art.
COLORING IS EASIER WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT TECHNIQUE
-
VERSATILITY
What we do with markers and pencils isn't magic. Coloring Theory should work with watercolor, pastels, or any other medium. It's not about the product, it's how we use the color.
COLOR IS UNIVERSAL. COLORING LESSONS SHOULD BE TOO
-
INDEPENDENCE
"How to color bread" is useless unless you plan to color sandwiches for the rest of your life. With fine art concepts, you can apply the lesson to an endless variety of objects.
COLOR WHATEVER YOU WANT, WHENEVER YOU WANT
COLOR LIKE AN ARTIST

ADVANCED COLORING SKILLS REQUIRED
Bread & Butter and Olives are projects originally from The Underpainters group. UP projects give students enough instruction to begin a project, then ask the student to take over and make color and technique decisions.
The video is not a full demonstration. Amy shares tips for difficult areas but large areas of the project are not demonstrated at all.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS WORKSHOP IF YOU CAN NOT COLOR WITHOUT A DEMONSTRATION.
How Bread & Olives works:
Enroll today for instant access to two separate lessons including detailed supply lists, line art, photo references, printable guidebooks, and livestream video discussions. No waiting.
Consult the photo references while you color independently. Printables include project diagrams and process photos to check your progress plus helpful descriptions and tips.
Watch the video for further helpful tips but the point is to improve your decision making skills by coloring on your own.

ADVANCED COLORING SKILLS REQUIRED
Beginner techniques like blending and layering will not be covered in these Workshops.
To master these skills before coloring Bread & Olives, I have two beginner courses. More info here.

No problem. Colored pencils are much easier than markers!
I don’t do anything fancy with pencils, anyway.
We cover the pencil technique in every demo and most marker people pick it up easily in just a few projects.
-
Sorry, but no. We’re doing fine art techniques which require artist grade alcohol markers. Despite what you’ve heard or read, inexpensive markers are not the same as Copic and Olo.
Inexpensive markers can not handle the kind of heavy layering and color mixing we do in my lessons.
If you absolutely must use student or craft grade markers, then I’m the wrong instructor for you. There are other instructors who can teach you to use them.
-
Absolutely! Actually, I expect you to make lots of substitutions!
At this level of coloring, I provide a set of generic color swatches instead of a detailed supply list. Students are encouraged to make their own color choices but it can help to see what I used and think about why.
If you’re really stuck, you can consult the shopping list section for the exact brands and color numbers I used — but this lesson only works when you venture off on your own path and use the colors you see in the reference.
